Tarl began kendo at the Ballarat kendo club when he was 9 years old, as a kid Tarl loved anything to do with swordfighting and it was only natural that he found the club.

Tarl has represented the Ballarat kendo club, the Victorian Kendo Renmei and the Australian Kendo renmei at many national and International events, he received his 6th Dan in Tokyo in 2024

Tarl has been a winning member of the australian kendo championships in the team division 4 times and has placed  in the individual competion multiple times as well as coming first place at the Australian Masters games.

As of 2026 he is a current Member of the Victorian Kendo Team
